Blue Fall Decor with Fabric Pumpkin Tutorial

There’s pumpkins everywhere!  (In Bubba’s voice from Forrest Gump…)  Pumpkin soup, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin juice, carved pumpkins, white pumpkins, burlap pumpkins, velvet pumpkins, pumpkin bread, painted pumpkins, Dollar Tree pumpkins, Dollar Tree pumpkins, Dollar Tree pumpkins….I have seen some of the most ingenious pumpkins this Fall on Pinterest and blogs using the $1 Dollar Tree pumpkins.  I only wish that we could buy them in multiple sizes!

My Dollar Tree fabric pumpkin tutorial is for a pumpkin I totally came up with by accident.  I saw tutorials for great decoupage pumpkins using fabric and mod podge and so I made one…but it didn’t look as good as I had hoped.  Jo-Ann fabric store had their fabric squares on sale a few weeks ago and I bought several squares of blue fabric to make the mod podge Dollar Tree pumpkins.  Since I had the supplies, I decided to use them one way or the other.

I began by pulling the stem off the top of the pumpkin.  Next, I opened up the fabric square.  The way the fabric is packaged, it’s folded into 12 little squares.   When you open it up, it’s easy to cut.  I cut one row of squares off.  (I tried using the entire fabric package but there was just too much fabric.  Trimming one line of the fabric worked perfectly.)  I sat the pumpkin in the center of the fabric with the dull side up and pulled the fabric up in small pieces.  Here’s the fun part…push the fabric into the center of the pumpkin where the stem was.  I used my scissors and punched it in easily.  The pumpkin is a foam-like material and the fabric just stays in on it’s own.

I then pulled the fabric tight and continued to push the excess into the center of the pumpkin.  Once the pumpkin was done. I took gold jewelry wire and wound it around my pen to make a vine look.  I made two and pressed them into the center.

I have a huge stash of artificial flowers and greenery and found two green and brown leaves that I simply spray painted using a bronze spray paint.

I looked all over my house for something cute to make a stem with.  I found a few extra drawer pulls/door knobs that I had bought from Hobby Lobby for my laundry room makeover.  It worked perfectly!  The color matched everything which was pure luck on my part.

I specifically made the fabric pumpkin blue for my foyer.  The theme is Blue Fall Decor.  Here’s the completed area.

The first fabric pumpkin I made is on the bottom shelf.  I used a dried pumpkin stem left over from last Fall and glued it on the top.  Sitting beside the lamp is a white velvet pumpkin I also made.  I will be showing you later this week my Halloween tablescape  and a tutorial for the velvet pumpkins in white and black.

How do you like blue for Fall decor?  This is new for me.  I was going to decorate this space in blue and orange (the opposite wall in my foyer is orange) but the white and blue just seemed to mesh together well so I just went with it.

This craft costs about $5 if you have to buy a knob.  It took all of 5 minutes to make.  My favorite part is that you can customize your pumpkin to fit your decor.  The pumpkin can easily be stripped next year with the fabric and other materials used for other purposes.
